This is a really common area that we cover at the start of someone's journey and also throughout because it comes up regularly
It's a hot topic that has many different opinions but we're going to give you what we recommend...
We believe that you should aim to weigh yourself each day.
Every day for a few reasons:
1. You understand daily fluctuations
Your weight, male and female will change daily. This is normal and it's okay. It can change daily because of what you ate the night before, fluid balance, salt balance, stress levels and whether you have been to the toilet or not...
Once you understand this, it can be easier to weigh yourself each day and not freak out
2. It keeps you in the game mentally
Weighing in each day can keep you in the mindset of staying on top of your food and exercise
It's almost like checking in with yourself each morning to keep you on target.
Studies have found that people who weigh themselves more often (every day) are more likely to succeed than those that don't/weigh themselves less often.
3. It gives you more accurate data
If your goal is to lose weight we expect to see a weight loss of between 1 to 2 lbs per week for a moderate deficit of 15-20%. This is a healthy weight loss.
What works best is to weigh in each day and take an average over the 7 days.
This also brings up the question of...
"Why can't I just weigh myself once per week then?"
Well, you can...but for us, every day is better because of reasons 1 & 2.
Side note on weighing yourself as a female surrounding the menstrual cycle...
What we recommend you do with weighing yourself around your monthly cycle is the same principle as above. Take your weight reading each day, average it out over 7 days but then...
We compare once per month because you will have gone through a complete cycle
This is why every week you might see the scale go up and down but then on week 4 you lose the weight
So compare once per month
Hope that gives you some clarity around weight and how often to take it
It can be very confusing but we like to simplify it
